Help provide happy childhoods around the world

Every child should have the right to a happy childhood with a loving home and family. But that is not the case for many children around the world. To highlight how important it is for children to have a happy childhood, SOS Children's Villages has created the “SOS! Childhood” campaign to spread the message that we and our friends around the world are committed to providing a better future and a happy childhood for all children -- today, in the future, and all around the world.

You can help provide happy childhoods around the world by sending a hug, sharing a happy memory or signing up to be an SOS! Childhood friend!

Angelina Jolie News Is Great for Charity

It's no secret that Angelina Jolie is an SOS Children's Villages supporter: The famous actress and her equally famous actor-husband, Brad Pitt, have helped SOS Children's Villages in various ways for years. But you wouldn't know that if you were reading celebrity sites today!

Over ten blogs we can count have posted exciting, inquisitive headlines this week regarding the couple's rumored, "secret family." Although Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt did recently visit the SOS Children's Village in Amman, Jordan, at the special invitation of Her Majesty Queen Noor (another proud supporter of SOS), there is no secret about their intentions -- they were there to help.

And, their visit continues to help. Since the Jordan visit in October, SOS Children's Villages has gained new child sponsors every time blogs post a story about the visit. Whether those blogs feature salacious gossip or not, their readers seem to be inspired by stories of a super star who cares for children.

It's no secret: You can help a child in an SOS Children's Village too. Visit http://www.sos-usa.org to learn more about sponsoring a child today.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy visits SOS Children's Village in Spain

SOS Children's Village El Escorial in Spain opened its doors recently to Dutch soccer superstar Ruud Van Nistelrooy and his wife Leontien. Van Nistelrooy, one of the top strikers in Europe, currently resides in Spain where he plays for the European power club, Real Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy has been an ambassador for SOS-Netherlands for ten years and speaks highly of his experiences with SOS:
"My first introduction to the work of SOS Children's Villages took place in 1998 in Bucarest when we played there with the Dutch national youth football team. This time, however, I had time to walk around the village and talk with the children and their SOS mothers. It felt very special to hear their personal, mostly difficult and gripping, stories and see the loving environment they now live in".

SOS Children's Villages - USA Honors our Veterans

November 11 marks a day of remembrance in honor of military veterans around the world. For many U.S. soldiers, active or retired, Veterans Day is a day to pay their respect and to reflect on their own personal experiences during and after war. One veteran in particular, Joe Skalamera, recalls his time spent in Vietnam and what inspired him to help the children of that country:
“During the war, you witness horrible things. Part of what really bothered me was what was happening to the children there. Seeing them dead was the worst thing — seeing them starving, forlorn. A lot were orphaned, many had been abandoned...”
In 1999, Joe returned to Vietnam to examine his past. Along the way, he visited the SOS Children's Village in Hanoi and decided to sponsor a child. Another 10 years later, this Veteran's Day, Joe continues to sponsor a Vietnamese girl named Ly Hoang.
"I can feel peace now through the work that I'm doing in Vietnam with SOS Children's Villages, Vets With a Mission, Hope for the Children of Vietnam and Sun In My Heart — all organizations that are helping children in Vietnam."
We at SOS Children's Villages - USA would like to honor Mr. Skalamera and all veterans this Veteran's Day for all they have done in this world, and all they continue to do.

Please have a happy Veterans Day. And please click here to read more about Mr. Skalamera and the SOS Child he sponsors.
